Monterey
Secondary
College
Library
is the
gateway to a wide variety
of resources available to the College Community. This guide is intended to assist you in
learning about the resources and services currently available.

AUDIO-VISUAL
COLLECTION
This
collection includes non-book items; eg. videos, dvds, talking books & kits.
Items are indicated
in the catalogue by AV and available for use at school in the 'Reading
Room'. Arrange with the Library staff to use these materials. The
'Reading Room’ may be booked for the viewing of
videos by individuals or small groups. The school
subscribes to Foxtel Education, and therefore records specific, contemporary
programmes which facilitate a stimulating learning environment.
BOOK
CLUB
The
Book Club meets every week in the Reading Room. Membership is open to all
students. Activities include; discussion of books read by students and Library
staff, suggestions for book purchases, promotion of books and book
reviews. The Book Club is purely a recreational activity, and is available
to anyone who enjoys reading.
CD-ROMS
Some
CD ROMs are available for student use in the
Library and available for overnight loan. Check the display in the Library
for titles available on CD ROM.
CIRCULATION
DESK

This
is where you go first for all your enquiries. Whether it is to do with loans, photocopying,
using the Library, finding items on the shelf, specialized help or any
other problem, come here first.

CLOSED
RESERVE
COLLECTION
This
collection includes books, journal articles, bound vertical file materials and
other materials that are in high demand. They are available for use within the
Library and for overnight loan only. All Closed Reserve items are listed
in the online catalogue (Bibliotech).
COMPUTERS
|

Computers
are available for student use during class times, study periods, lunch
times and before and after school.
Computers
must be 'borrowed' using your Photo ID card.
All
computers in the Library are connected to the World Wide
Web and the College intranet.
Students
have access to computers once the Computer Usage Agreement
has been returned the Information Technology
Co-ordinator.

LIBRARY
INTRANET
The
Library Intranet, accessed from the link at the top of this page, contains
resources for teachers and students. These include assignment resources,
on-line encyclopaedias and dictionaries, searchable databases such as WebLinks
and MacquarieNet, a remote access point to the Library Catalogue and Teaching
and Learning resources for teachers.
LOANS
The following loan times apply to items in the Library:-

Non-fiction
items can be borrowed for 1 week

Fiction
books for 2 weeks.

Closed
Reserve items and Vertical File materials are available overnight.

Digital
still and video cameras may be booked and borrowed by students.
LUNCHTIME
ACTIVITIES
During
lunchtime students are allowed to quietly play a variety of card and board
games, provided they do not disturb other students who may be reading, finishing
homework or studying.
MAIN
COLLECTION

This
section is where most of the items available for loan are kept.
Non-fiction
items are arranged by the Dewey Decimal system,
therefore items on the same topic are shelved
together.
Fiction
books are arranged using the first 3 letters of
the Author’s name:
eg SMI = SMITH.

in these papers are accessible through the Echo Index.

national newspapers are available on-line and via Macquarienet.

The
Online Catalogue (OPAC) lists all items held by the Monterey Secondary College
Library and most department collections. Search options available include author,
title, subject, series and keyword.

PERIODICALS
COLLECTION
This collection includes journals, magazines and newspaper
inserts which are received on a regular basis. These items
are indicated in the Library catalogue as being located in 'Periodicals'.
Magazines
are available on a 3 day loan. "Guidelines" is available as a
reference source at the Front Desk.
PHOTOCOPYING

A
student photocopier is available for student use in the Library. To
photocopy students give the Library staff monies which will then be credited to
their Photo ID card. All photocopying requires students to have their ID card. Each A4 page costs 10c. Overhead
transparencies are available at a cost of 50c each. Only
transparencies purchased in the Library may be used in the photocopier.

QUIET
READING
AREA
|

|
This
space is used by classes for the " Wide
Reading"
Programme. Easy chairs and cushions provide students with a comfortable
environment for the fortnightly presentation by Ms Davies and their silent reading periods.
The
Reading Area is also used by study groups,
and for discussion, listening and viewing.

REFERENCE
COLLECTION
This
area includes general and subject dictionaries, encyclopaedias, indexes,
handbooks, yearbooks, etc. Reference items are indicated in
the Library catalogue in the location field as 'Reference'. Reference items are not available for loan.
There are a number of on-line reference sites on the
Library Intranet including MacquarieNet, WebLinks, Encyclopaedia.com, Wikipedia
and the on-line dictionary, WordCentral.
RETURNS
TROLLEY
This
is where returned items are sorted for re-shelving. If an item you are looking for
is not 'on loan' and not on the shelf, please check the Returns Trolley.
All books used but not borrowed in the Library should placed on the Returns
Trolley.
SPECIAL
COLLECTIONS
In
June 2005, the Library launched its Biography and Senior Fiction Collections.
Both Collections have been targeted for further development because of their
special interest to our Later Years students and other enthusiastic readers from
the Middle Years classes. In 2006, while these collections will continue to be
developed, the Special Collections Development focus will be on the new genre of
Graphic Novels.

VISITS
The
next Special Event in the Library will be the visit by Special Guest,
author Anthony Eaton. We have several of his books in our collection, including A
New kind of dreaming (the Year 9 text), Fireshadow, Nathan Nutboard Hits the
Beach and The
Darkness.
TEACHER
REFERENCE
COLLECTION
This
collection contains curriculum materials written for teachers, and includes
resources produced by the Education Department of Victoria.

SPACES

The
Library has three areas available for class activities.
There is a Computer Pod equipped with 16 computers and seating for 20, the
Quiet Reading Area which seats 30 students comfortably and The Library
Conference Room. Audio-visual equipment is available for use in the Conference
Room.

VERTICAL
FILE
The
Vertical File contains articles from magazines, brochures, books, etc. They
are kept in folders and are arranged in Dewey decimal order. All extracts
can be borrowed
overnight. These folders cover a variety of current topics being studied in
various subjects. These folders are located in the filing cabinets adjacent
to the VCE study area.
